Les Sauniers de l'Île de Ré
Re Island and salt have long common history. It started with the monks of the Abbey of St Michel in Herm, they built the first salt marshes in the 15th century. Essential for conserving food, salt became very popular with the North European countries. In 1942, in order to produce salt with higher-quality, many producers decided to join force and create in 1942 “La Coopérative des Sauniers de l'Île de Ré”. By sharing the warehouse and their market, they could control the salt value which was very fluctuating over the years. Combining traditional way to harvest and new technology for hygiene control and the packaging, the Cooperative can guarantee high quality and authenticity of their sea salt.
